Balance Scale Puzzle
Level 1Tap blocks from the crate to load the right pan. Make both sides weigh the same!
What Is a Balance Scale Puzzle?
A balance scale puzzle gives you a scale with blocks already on one pan and a crate of numbered blocks to spend. The question is simple enough for a five-year-old and satisfying for an adult: which blocks make the two sides weigh the same? Because many different combinations can balance the scale, every puzzle has lots of right answers — and the real challenge is finding the answer that uses the fewest blocks.
How to Play: Make Both Pans Weigh the Same
- The left pan already holds some blocks. Their total is your puzzle.
- Tap number blocks in the crate to load the right pan; tap a loaded block to take it back.
- When both pans weigh the same, the beam levels — solved!
- Find a solution with the fewest possible blocks for ★★★. New levels keep coming as long as you like, and every solved level unlocks the next.
Balance Puzzles for Kids: No Timers, No Losing
This puzzle was designed as a first math puzzle: there is no clock, no wrong-answer penalty and no game over. If a combination doesn't balance, take the blocks back and try another — the scale just tips the other way, which is itself a clue. Younger players practice counting and comparing; older players start spotting that 3 + 3 can be replaced by a single 6. Several right answers means every attempt earns something.
Why Balance Puzzles Are a First Step to Algebra
A balance scale is a picture of an equation: the beam is the equals sign, and whatever you do to one side must happen to the other. When a child thinks "the left side is 12, so I need 12 on the right", they are solving 3 + 9 = □ + □ with their hands. Later, the same intuition becomes subtracting the same amount from both sides to keep an equation true. Balance puzzles quietly build the mental model that algebra notation writes down years later.
