Typing Games
Type the letter on each balloon to pop it before it floats away.
What Is the Balloon Typing Game?
Balloon typing is a shooting game you play with the keyboard: colorful balloons float up the screen and each one carries a letter, a word or a little sum. Type what a balloon carries and a dart shoots up and pops it. Let one drift off the top of the screen and it costs a heart — three escapes and the round is over. It turns keyboard practice into something kids actually ask to play, and it runs right here in the browser with nothing to install.
How to Play
- Pick a grade (1–5) at the top — the choice is remembered for next time.
- Press Start or tap the sky, then just type. On phones and tablets a keyboard pops up when you tap the screen.
- Each keystroke fires a dart. Finish a balloon's whole label and it bursts for points — longer words are worth more.
- A wrong key flashes the screen red and dents your accuracy. Three balloons floating away ends the game.
- Chase your best score for the current grade, then share it with a friend.
Grades 1–5: from Single Keys to Sums
- Grade 1 — single letters from the home row (a s d f g h j k l), slow balloons. First touch-typing steps.
- Grade 2 — the whole alphabet, a little faster.
- Grade 3 — short words of three or four letters: cat, sun, fish, star…
- Grade 4 — longer words of four to six letters: apple, rocket, garden…
- Grade 5 — words and simple arithmetic: a balloon shows 3+4 or 9−5 and you type the answer. Mental math and typing in one go.
Why Keyboard Practice Matters Early
Typing is the writing tool of the next decade of school. Kids who hunt-and-peck lose track of their own sentences; kids who type without looking can think and write at the same time. A typing game keeps them on the home row long enough for the muscle memory to form — the balloons give each keystroke a target, a sound and a point score, which is exactly the feedback loop a worksheet lacks. The math balloons in grade 5 add recall under time pressure, the same skill the rest of HanoiStack trains with puzzles.
Tips for Faster Typing
- Anchor the fingers on the home row — left hand on a-s-d-f, right on j-k-l-;. The bumps on F and J are the anchors.
- Look at the balloon, not the keys. Speed comes from recall, not from checking.
- Accuracy first. A wrong key costs a red flash and an accuracy point — steady 95% beats fast 70% every time.
- Type ahead. Once the first letter of a word feels automatic, read the rest of the word while your fingers finish it.
Free Typing Practice — No Download
The game above is completely free: no account, no app store, no ads inside the play area. Choose a grade and play a round in a minute — it works on laptops with a real keyboard and on tablets with the on-screen one, which makes it an easy classroom warm-up or after-school activity.
